PRESS RELEASEOn Friday March 10, 2017 a Trooper from the SP Coxsackie barracks attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of State Route 81 and State Route 9W in the Town of Coxsackie. The vehicle operator, later identified as Jeffrey Dean age 48 of the Town of Coxsackie, did physically assault the Trooper and fled from the scene in his vehicle. The Trooper did pursue Dean into the Village of Coxsackie, east on Mansion Street, and into Riverside Park. Dean then intentionally drove his vehicle down the boat launch ramp and into the Hudson River. There was no contact between the marked police unit and Dean's vehicle. Once in the water Dean exited his vehicle and attempted to swim to shore. The Trooper and members of the Village of Coxsackie Police Department attempted to remove Dean from the water but were unsuccessful. Water Rescue Units from the State Police, Greene County Sheriff's Office, and the Ulster County Sheriff's Office conducted a search and ultimately located Dean deceased in the river. Dean's body was removed from the water and turned over to the Greene County Coroner pending autopsy. The investigation remains ongoing and any persons with information regarding the incident are asked to contact SP Catskill at (518) 622-8600.
