Catskill residents getting FREE smoke alarms Saturday

American Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms in the Village of Catskill

Catskill, N.Y. (March 22, 2017) – The American Red Cross is joining forces with the Village of Catskill Fire Department on Saturday, March 25 to help local families prepare for home fires. During this community-wide Home Fire Campaign event, volunteers will be knocking on doors throughout the Village, offering lifesaving fire safety education and FREE smoke alarms wherever they may be needed.

Home fires impact hundreds of families in the Eastern New York Region each year. Experts suggest that residents may have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home, while working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half. In an effort to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries that occur each year, the Red Cross is committed to providing lifesaving tools and resources that support fire prevention and preparedness in local communities.

Saturday’s event in Catskill will kick off at 9:00 A.M. at the Village of Catskill Fire Department, located at 1 Central Avenue. Throughout the day, volunteer teams will spread out across the Village to check and install smoke alarms, discuss important fire safety tips, and help families create personalized escape plans for their homes.

Local residents who would like to schedule a visit from the Red Cross during Saturday’s event are encouraged to call (518) 694-5121 or visit redcross.org/eny/homefires as soon as possible.

Red Cross volunteers and local community partners are working together to make this event a success. Several local restaurants – including Penny’s Diner, Angela’s Italian Bistro and Bar, and La Conca D’oro – have donated food to energize the volunteers who will be working throughout the day to help make families safer.

Local Home Fire Campaign events are made possible in large part by the Red Cross’ corporate partners. In the Eastern New York Region, the Home Fire Campaign is generously supported by MVP Health Care, Price Chopper/Market 32, State Farm, Stewart’s Shops, Tri City Rentals, Turner Construction Company and Ulster Savings Bank.
