Opening arguments are expected to be heard Tuesday in the trial of Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

Prosecutors claim McLaughlin, a Republican, stole funds from his campaign then filed false documents with the state Board of Elections to cover it up. McLaughlin, who previously served as a member of the state Assembly, was arraigned on felony charges in 2021. He tells The Times Union the case against him is more of a persecution than a prosecution.
