SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENT
Greenport, NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on November 1, 2017 at approximately 7:33pm, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to a one vehicle accident on State Route 9, just west of Fingar Road in the Town of Greenport.
Deputies found that a 2007 Subaru Legacy, operated by 32 year old Donald Schumacher of Gt. Barrington MA., was traveling in a westerly direction on State Route 9 and crossed the centerline, striking a guard rail on the south side of the roadway. The vehicle then began to roll over several times while going down an embankment and into an open field where it came to rest upright.
The operator was ejected from the vehicle and sustained head and chest injuries. Mr. Schumacher was airlifted by LifeNet 71to Albany Medical Center. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
Donald Schumacher was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (Class U Misdemeanor) and Moved from lane unsafely (Traffic Infraction). He was issued tickets returnable to Greenport Court on November 20, 2017 at 4:00pm.
Greenport Rescue Squad and Greenport Fire Department assisted at the scene.
