Christmas Toys collected for Puerto Rican Children

American Legion, Fire Company help local teen offer a Merry Christmas to the children victims of the Puerto Rican hurricane

HUDSON/ALBANY -- Greenport resident Kayleigh McCagg’s efforts to ensure Merry Christmas for thousands of Puerto Rican children impacted by Hurricane Maria was bolstered with donations this week from two area community organizations.

McCagg, a senior at Hudson High School and in the New Visions: World Health program, received donations of dozens of toys and games from Hudson American Legion Post 184 and the Stockport Fire Company. The toys and games are being added to those gathered from area residents at collection sites and will be shipped to Hurricane victims this month via Albany-based Central Civico and a coalition of like-minded organizations that formed the Puerto Rico Disaster Relief Team of the Capital Region.

“It made me sad to see the devastation and I thought about all of the children who lost everything and how devastating it would be for them throughout the holidays. I wanted to do something to help them and brighten their day, even if it was just for a little while,” said McCagg.
