Accident kills Chatham man

SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES FATAL ACCIDENT IN CHATHAM

Chatham, NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that Sheriff’s Patrols were dispatched by Columbia County 911 at approximately 11:18am this morning to a one vehicle accident on Waldorf Road, just west of State Route 203, in the Town of Chatham.

Deputy Sheriff’s found that a 2012 Ford F250 pick-up truck, operated by 59 year old David R. Mitchison of Chatham NY, was traveling in a westerly direction on Waldorf Road and for unknown reasons went off the north side of the roadway striking a large tree. After the impact, the vehicle came to rest in the roadway. Mr. Mitchison was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no passengers in the vehicle and the cause of the accident is still under investigation by Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators.

Coroner Bertram responded to the scene and is also assisting with this investigation. There is an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday morning, January 2, 2018, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

Valatie Rescue Squad and North Chatham Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Investigating for the Sheriff’s Office are Captain John DeRocha, Lieutenant Wayne Lopez, Senior Investigator Kevin Skype, Investigator William Dunspaugh, and Sergeant Jeffrey Hofstetter.
