Complication from being overweight or obese is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States including conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Obesity impacts individual health and overall quality of life including both physical and mental health issues.
In a report compiled by the Healthy Capital District Initiative, approximately 12,000 Columbia County adults were obese. Almost 29,000 were overweight or obese with approximately 13,000 adults who do not participate in any leisure time physical activity.

Physical inactivity is one of many complex issues contributing to high rates of obesity. The Columbia County Department of Health and our community partners are working to increase awareness and educate our community to encourage good nutrition, promote physical activity, and discuss stress relieving activities, especially in our children.
