SHERIFF”S OFFICE INVESTIGATES SINGLE ENGINE PLANE ACCIDENT
Taghkanic, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on May 26, 2018 at approximately 4:42pm, Deputy Sheriffs at the Hillsdale Sub Station were advised of a single engine aircraft accident, which occurred in a private field located next to Koeppe Road in the Town of Taghkanic.
The report came from the pilot, who indicated that his engine was stalling and would not restart around 12:30pm this date, so he had to make an emergency landing in a grassy farm field. The pilot touched down and the plane lost its landing gear due to the ground not being level. The left wing then struck the ground causing the plane to spin 180 degrees. Inspection of the aircraft revealed additional damage to the single engine prop and the belly of the plane.
The plane was occupied by two individuals who were not injured as a result of the accident. The pilot was Roger Tryon, 54 years old, from Monterey Massachusetts and the passenger was Steve Snyder, 53 years old, also from Monterey Massachusetts.
The plane is two passenger fixed wing above the passenger compartment style with a single motor.
Mr. Tryon was flying from the Dutchess County Airport to the Great Barrington Massachusetts Airport when he had to attempt to land the plane.
Sheriff Bartlett advises that the investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.
On the scene for the Sheriff’s Office were Sgt. Eli Fieser and Deputy Daniel Keyser.
