Kid catches big fish, Wins $1500

posted by Bill Williams -

The results are final for 8th Annual United Way “Leo Lasher” Catfish Derby.

The “over-all” winner of the $1,500.00 Cash Prize for the Longest Catfish of the Day is Kevin Kovacs, 10 years old. Kevin submitted this 27 1/2” catfish at 10:45 AM.

“This is the first time that a fisherman in the youth category won the big prize” said Brad Poster, Director of the United Way of Columbia and Greene Counties. “The event had a total of 438 registrations, although not everyone was fisherman. The first catfish was entered at 7:10 AM. A total of 185 live catfish were entered in the contest and released back into the Hudson River.”

“It will be several weeks until we know the profit from this event. Each year the profits from the Catfish Derby are allocated to local (Columbia and Greene Counties) non-profits to help fund programs such as after school programs, food pantries, substance abuse programs, etc.” continued Brad Poster “In just the last three years the Catfish Derby has returned over $40,000.00 to the community by funding over fifty (50) local programs.”

“We had dozens of prizes ranging from a “tailgaters generator”, to a new bicycle and helmet and a lot of fishing gear. But no one won set the NYS Channel Catfish Record to win the Village Dodge pick-up truck with a boat, motor and trailer. That fish is still in the river!”

Matt Luvera Greene County Legislator representing the Town and Village of Catskill presented the letter from NYS Assemblyman Chris Tague (pictured left, with Brad Poster, Director of the United Way of Columbia and Greene Counties, right)
