Athens man identified in Walmart overdose death



Greenport, NY – Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that the deceased male found in the parking lot at Wal-Mart was 59 year old Thomas W. MacGregor of Athens, New York.

On August 29, 2018, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by State Police in Catskill requesting assistance with the investigation of a missing man from Greene County. During the investigation, it was determined that the last known cell phone coordinates for Mr. MacGregor were in the area of Fairview Avenue and Joslen Blvd in the Town of Greenport. Deputy David Pulcher located MacGregor’s vehicle parked in the parking lot of the Greenport Wal-Mart. He was found to be deceased and the sole occupant of the vehicle. Deputy Pulcher requested Greenport Rescue Squad and Coroner James Bertram respond to the scene.

Sheriff’s Office Investigators responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The body was removed by French, Gifford, Preiter, and Blasl Funeral Home.

Based upon the investigation and video surveillance footage provided by Wal-Mart, it was determined that the vehicle arrived in the parking lot on August 20, 2018 and did not leave. Upon the discovery of further evidence that was collected at the scene and findings of the medical examiner, the death was ruled a presumed overdose do to heroin toxicity.

Sheriff Bartlett urges members of the community to contact authorities with any concerns of suspicious activity or behavior, even if they feel that the incident may be minor.
