Route 23A between Haines Falls and Palenville, Greene County, Closed from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24

Motorists are advised that a three and-a-half-mile stretch of Route 23A between Haines Falls and Palenville, in the towns of Hunter and Catskill in Greene County, will be fully closed from Monday, Sept. 17, until Monday, Sept. 24, weather permitting, as part of a New York State Department of Transportation project to repair a slope area on the Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway section of this state highway.

The closure, between Wingate Road in Haines Falls and the Route 23A bridge over the Kaaterskill Creek entering Palenville, will allow for the installation of concrete stabilizer pods to stabilize the slope below Route 23A.

During the closure period, the official detour route will send motorists to Routes 32, 23 and 296.

It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully in work zones, for their own safety and the safety of workers.

NYSDOT and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee recently unveiled a new public service announcement and social media campaign focused on the importance of respecting flagging personnel. This year’s work zone safety campaign, “Flaggers have families too,” is designed to remind motorists that flagging personnel are not attempting to disrupt traffic — they are simply doing their jobs and want to get home safely at the end of each work day. The PSA can be viewed here and here.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
