DEPUTY SHERIFFS INVESTIGATE SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT IN CLAVERACK
Claverack,NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on October 9th, 2018 at approximately 4:00pm, Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to a two vehicle personal injury accident involving a school bus on State Route 23, at the intersection with County Route 16 in the Town of Claverack.
Deputies found that a 2008 BMW, operated by 71 year old Daniel O’Connell of Hillsdale NY, was driving West bound on State Route 23 behind several other vehicles when he attempted to pass the slower moving line of vehicles on the left. As Mr. O’Connell was attempting to pass the vehicles, a 2014 school bus owned by the Taconic Hills School District and driven by David Dougherty age 59 of Ancramdale NY, also traveling west was making a legal left turn onto County Route 16. As the school bus was making its left turn the bus was struck in the driver’s side by the O’Connell vehicle. Both vehicles became disabled in the roadway at such time.
At the time of the accident the School bus was occupied by two students aged 14 and 15 as well as three Taconic Hills School staff members and the bus driver David Dougherty. Daugherty was transported by Greenport Rescue to Sharon Hospital in Connecticut complaining of neck pain. No one else was injured, including the driver of the BMW. All occupants of the School bus as well as the driver of the BMW were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Mr. O’Connell was issued a traffic ticket for Improper Passing that is returnable to the Claverack Town Court on October 23rd 2018 at 5:30 pm.
Greenport Rescue Squad and Churchtown Fire Department assisted at the scene.
