Other driver charged, in Sunday crash with Sheriff's car

SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATING PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENT IN GHENT

(SECOND RELEASE)

Ghent, NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on November 25, 2018 at approximately 5:47pm, a Deputy Sheriff was involved in a personal injury accident while responding to the shooting incident in Stockport.

Deputy Peter Merante, operating a 2017 Ford police interceptor sedan, was traveling on State Route 9H in the area of County Route 20 and was struck by 2019 Chevrolet, operated by 30 year old Clifford Jean-Baptiste of Montreal Quebec Canada.

Greenport Rescue Squad transported Deputy Merante to Columbia Memorial Hospital for hip, leg, and back pain. Mr. Jean-Baptiste and his passenger, a Melissa De Pestre, were also transported to CMH by Greenport Rescue Squad for evaluation and later released.

Mr. Jean-Baptiste was issued a ticket for failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle. The ticket is returnable to Ghent Town Court at a later date.

Greenport Rescue Squad and West Ghent Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Investigating for the Sheriff’s Office are First Sergeant Louis Bray and Deputy Zachary Torchia.
