RETIRED SHERIFF PAUL J. PROPER SR. PASSES AWAY

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that retired Sheriff Paul J. Proper Sr. passed away last evening.

Sheriff Proper started his career in 1961 working on the road patrol. He became Sheriff in 1977 serving three terms. He held the office of President for the New York State Sheriffs Association in 1988. And he has been a lifelong firefighter for the Copake Fire District for over 50 years.

Sheriff Proper hired me in 1984 and took the chance in a young man becoming a police officer. Through my 34 year career I have strived to follow in his footsteps. He was a man of honor, integrity, and always serve his community. He will be dearly missed in the Columbia County and in the law-enforcement family. Please keep Marge and the rest of the Proper family in your thoughts and prayers.
